General Update
18:40 CET, September 8 - The new beta key validation system
Iain has compiled a few short Q&As about the key validation pages.

Q: I can't log into the site, I get the 'Authentication servers are offline message'
A: Yes, you do not need to login to the site to use this page. Simply go to here and fill in your details.

Q: Who can use that page?
A: Anyone who already has a beta centre account - this means anyone who created an account to apply for the closed beta or to recieve the newsletter even if they didn't get a closed beta invite. In addition, anyone who created an account on our site yesterday and has received a confirmation email.

Q: I don't have an account yet, when will I be able to use my key?
A: We are bringing a new account centre online, at the moment we have no ETA for this but we will keep you informed via the news.

Q: I put my details in, now what?
A: All you need to do now is to wait for an email from us. This email will either confirm that your validation is complete (in which case you can log in and play) or that there was a problem with your details (in which case you need to go back and resubmit your information).

Q: Why are you doing it this way?
A: To reduce the load on the database server we have an asynchronous system. What this means is that when you put your details in, the system will store it, another system will then check it and confirm the details to you. This means the whole system is much smoother.

Q: How long before the confirmation emails arrive?
A: This will depend but the current turn around seems to vary between 1 and 2 hours, it is possible that some people will be waiting for longer whilst others will get a reply sooner. If you haven't received an email yet, be sure to check your junkmail folders or spam filters. There is currently a substantial back-log on our system. Our technicians are working very hard to have your confirmations sent out.

Q: Is there a difference between the link posted today and the link posted in the news yesterday?
A: No, both are the same system.

Q: When I get the email can I log in immediately and play?
Sadly no, there is a delay before your account is activated. When you get the email you may not be able to patch immediately but as soon as you can patch, you can play, this is normally less than an hour.

15:20 CET, September 8

Several teams are now working together diligently to bring you an improved key validation procedure. Once our internal tests turn out positive we will launch this service as soon as possible. This has been the nr. 1 bottleneck in allowing players to join the Open Beta servers so we have high hopes for these changes. More updates to come!

12:10 CET, September 8

Sunday's soft launch ended up not being very soft. We experienced technical difficulties on primarily our account registration and key authentication platforms. A slim stream of players continued to wade their way through these problems, with the help of some rather unorthodox methods. This trend continued throughout the night.

As announced on our news, we took our registration and authentication platforms down for maintenance this morning. We hope to be able to bring them back online by early afternoon.

Game servers have been down for much of this morning, but after a successful and universal EU server reset, they seem to be stable. All in all, our servers performed well yesterday. This was, however, completely overshadowed by other problems. We are now back in full force and we hope to be able to resolve the most pressing issues during the day. Our number one priority is to allow our many Open Beta testers to try out the game, and by doing so provide us and Mythic with much valued data and feedback.

News feed
22:30 CET, September 8 - Account creation

As we have announced before we have temporarily deactivated account creation on our web page to allow the database server to completely focus on the open beta code validation.

This procedure is efficient and you are finally able to register their codes slowly and access the game. Due to the large amount of the registration requests, this will still take several hours before all entries have been processed.

Because of this we will have to keep the account creation deactivated until tomorrow. Please be assured that every step we take is done to – under the circumstances – deliver WAR to Europe as soon as possible.

We thank you for your understanding and your patience. Naturally, we will give you an update about the situation tomorrow morning.

10pm CET, September 8 - State of the key validation

In our previous news we announced that the news page to register your open beta codes is now available. While the deactivation of the authentication process and the synchronized handling of your registrations helped to improve the communication between the page and the account database, a lot of you encountered one of the following issues.

1. The website confirmed that it stored your data but you haven’t received a confirmation e-mail yet:
You have to stay patient. There is no sense in trying to connect to the patcher before you have the conformation. Before, there was an additional delay between the conformation mail and your access to the server, but our technical team improved the situation and got rid of that delay.

2. You have received the confirmation mail before but your attempts to login end with an authentication failure:
Our technical teams are aware of this issue and are currently fixing it. It should work at the end of the evening.

3. You get the error message “This key cannot be registered as it is not yet valid”:
You used the wrong key, probably one from the headstart or the bonus items. Valid open beta codes have the prefix “PCOB01”, “WARPBE” or “WARPBF”.

4. You’ve been waiting several hours and try to register your code several times with different browsers:
There is no reason to try to activate your code again and again. If you try you only stress the servers and in the end you will receive one mail that you code has been activated followed by several mails saying that “This key has already been activated”.

We know that everyone of you is very eager to get into the game. Our technical teams are continuously working to improve the performance of the registration process. We ask for your patience.

16:20 CET September 8 - Key Validation system online

This morning we explained to you that a new system would be coming for open beta key validation. We are pleased to announce that this is now online. For the moment this system is open to people who either already have a beta centre account on war-europe or those who created an account yesterday and have received a confirmation email. Those of you who have not yet had the chance to create an account must wait a little longer and to you we apologise for the delay.

To use the new system, if you are one of those who created your account yesterday, then first you must validate your account by following the link on the confirmation email if you have not already done so. Once you have done that, or if you already have an account on the war-europe site, then you should go to our new key validation page which you will find here. Once there you will put your account details in including your key and submit it. This will be checked via an asynchronous process and an email will be sent after a short time to either confirm your registration or to inform you of any errors.

15:00 CET September 8 - Key authentication update

As we told you in previous news, the key validation system has been taken offline while our technical teams work on it. A lot of work has been done and some of the hardware on the database server has been changed as well as a lot of software improvements and our teams are still working hard to prepare the systems.

As a result, we will launch a new code registration page today at 16:00 CET. This new page will help to validate the massive amount of beta codes. After you validate the page, the request will be first stored and then checked via an asynchronous treatment . In any case you will receive an email informing you as to whether your code has been activated or if there was an error in either your login, password or code.

On a related topic; if you created a war-europe account yesterday and have a validation email for this, these changes will allow you to follow that link and validate your account.

11:30 CET September 8 - Server issues

Since very early this morning there have been recurring problems with the open beta servers. This is an issue that affects all servers equally and so we have been working with Mythic to resolve this.

Now we are happy to say that the situation has been resolved and all servers are back online.

11:00 CET September 8 - Update on the database work

Early this morning we told you that we were working on our database servers and that we would update you with more information as we had it. Now we can tell you that the situation is as follows:

We have processed all the information from yesterday, all the new signups from yesterday have been processed and you should have received your validation email, while the database server is down however it will not be possible to follow the link to validate your account.

We have brought down our database servers to reconfigure it as we explained to you previously. Currently we are in the process of finalising the software changes and we expect to be able to update you on the progress of this at around Noon CET today.

Once again, we are sorry for the disappointment and we ask for your patience for just a little longer.

03:00 CET September 8 - Letter from GOA's CEO

Dear all,

I rarely address players directly, but I wanted to write you as too few of you have been able to access the open beta today.

As my team explained in the previous post, although we have opened the servers and corrected numerous issues during the last 24 hours but we have not yet solved the issue of saturated Open Beta key activations that we’re currently experiencing. I am sincerely sorry for this, and I understand all the frustration the situation has spawned.

Today was a dark day. We expected a massive influx of players, but reality was even harsher.
I personally commit that we will communicate to you as clearly as possible on the resolution of these current issues. My goal is to give Warhammer Online the success it deserves. Be ensured that all GOA teams, with Mythic’s support, are working hard to bring you the best possible game experience.

Best regards,
Ghislaine Le Rhun
GOA CEO

02:00 CET September 8 - State of the Beta

We have encountered serious problems with the authentication system since this morning, while the stability of the game servers, the speed of the patcher and the performance of the downloader have all been satisfactory. This issue, combined with an exceptional amount of traffic and a fault which was not identified during the extensive tests we ran on our platform has unfortunately limited the access to our servers to only a few of you along with our closed beta testers who had already been a part of the closed beta.

During the day, we have reconfigured authentication and database servers several times, both of which suffered under the huge number of simultaneous connections. The investigations and corrections we have done so far were essentially targeting the parts of the system which didn’t require a complete stop of the writing process in the database. This means we preferred to keep the database turned on during the day to let it work on the huge number of accounts that were in the process of being handled. This operation will continue through the night and when complete, we will shut down the database and reconfigure it.

If the operation works as anticipated, we can once again give you access to the account page and let you register your code for the open beta. We expect the whole maintenance to be finished late Monday morning.

Naturally, we will keep you informed of the development of this maintenance and we expect to give you an update mid-morning.

We thank you for your understanding at this very impatient time and we sincerely apologize for the situation.

Current Topics

Server caps
Previous closed beta testers are being let in. We are successively allowing more and more players join. The current population cap is 500 players per realm (so 1000 max players online per server) with an additional 1500 players in queue. We will raise both the online and queue caps by roughly 25% every few hours. This is a delicate process, vital in keeping the servers and starting zones in good shape. Reports from QA reveal that our Open Beta servers have indeed performed very well since they were brought online, as those of you who can currently play can surely attest to.

Why not simply add more servers?
The amount of servers are balanced after the needs of the total community. That is, one want the appropriate amount of servers to host a stable population of players. If we were to create enough players to host every single open beta tester right now, these servers would have a healthy population for a few hours. After a couple of days though, it would become apparent that there were simply too many servers and that players were too thinly spread to allow for a meaningful RvR experience.

The situation is similar with the server caps. Players must be let wave by wave, because the starting zones simply can't handle too many players. This is true both on a technical level and on a game-play level.

We know exactly how many Open Beta keys are available and we have tons of data on how large a portion of our playerbase is expected to be online at a given time of the week. Naturally, when launching the Open Beta, an exceptionally large part of the total number of players will be trying to play, but were we to adjust the number of servers to that one exceptional event, we would as said stand there with half-empty servers in a couple of days.

Retailer updates
The EA Store have had problems distributing the Open Beta keys. Status: investigating.

Key authentication and Account registration
During Sunday, we experienced severe problems with account registration and key registration. During Sunday night, however, increasing amounts of players got through and managed to register their accounts and validate their keys. These servers are now offline and are currently being reconfigured. We hope to bring them back online by Noon, CET.

Patching
We were experiencing problems with the patcher earlier today. As our technicians performed maintenance and optimization, many lost the connection with the patcher and had to restart. To the best of our knowledge, the patcher is now working.

Who needs a new account?
Anyone who is already in possession of a valid account through www.war-europe.com does not need to create a new account.
